Rare Tracks : Volume 2

It’s been a long time since I got the idea to include rare and unheard tracks from my past on my original web site. So welcome to the 2nd edition!

As it was with part 1, so it is now, downloading these tracks won’t cost you a penny! If, however, you can find it in your heart and pocketbook to donate something (anything) to the running of the web site, it would be hugely appreciated. Proceeds will go towards the making of my next solo album.

Donations can be done through Paypal and you don’t even need an account, just a credit card!

I hope you enjoy the songs.

Danny Vaughn

BOMBAY DOGS - THE LINE - Free MP3 Download
This one has a bit of a southern rock flair. Bombay Dogs were a group that I ran into when I was living in Atlanta. The drummer was helping me record my demos in his own studio when he asked if I’d be interested in finishing off some tracks for a band that he was playing with. They had everything recorded on 4 songs but wanted a different voice. They also had 2 songs they wanted to get some lyrics and melodies written for. We recorded everything in 1996 and in here I’ve included the 2 songs that I co-wrote with them. It was a good sounding demo but, alas, shop as we might, no one was interested. That is, until I played the songs on my radio show, “Me And My Big Mouth” recently! Then the requests came pouring in.

JORGE SALAN / DANNY VAUGHN - CHASE THE FIRE - Free MP3 Download
“Chase The Fire” is a song I co-wrote with Jorge Salan, a wonderfully gifted guitarist from Madrid. He has worked with a number of people, including Jeff Scott Soto and myself and we all sing his praises. He’s asked me twice to work with him and this song was the first effort. It was released on his 2007 album, “Chronicles Of An Evolution”.

TYKETTO - SHE WAS THE ONE - Free MP3 Download
This one was originally planned for Richie Zito’s “Avalon” album but we never did get it quite right. But Michael Arbeeny loved the idea and pushed me to re-write it for Tyketto. And we still never got it right. Then Brooke St. James suggested a whole new approach to the song, making it an acoustic number. We all liked this the most. But it wasn’t strong enough for the album as a whole. So we eventually decided to make it the bonus track for the Japanese release of “Dig In Deep”. As it turns out, I ended up playing everything on it and singing all of the parts. It may have been treated like a red-headed step-child, but it belongs in your complete Tyketto collection, nonetheless.

DANNY VAUGHN - I SHALL NOT WALK ALONE - Free MP3 Download
I first heard this Ben Harper song on The Blind Boys Of Alabama album, “Higher Ground”. Then, as now, it brought on tears. I think it is one of the most haunting songs I have ever heard and it wouldn’t leave me alone for months afterwards. I decided that the only way I could stop it from chasing me was to dig in and attempt to record my own version of it. This is just a home demo, and there is no way I come anywhere close to the emotion and depth of the original, but it’s a good first effort and I will try to do better on the next attempt. Thanks go out to Johnny Larsen for his fine piano work and Tony Marshall for helping us to record the piano part in Phil and Sue Ashcroft’s basement

VAUGHN - FLY AWAY (Total Rock Radio) - Free MP3 Download
One of my personal favorites of the solo songs that I’ve written. It sums up the frustration that anyone can identify with when they’ve tried to make a go of something, or somewhere, and finally had to admit defeat. This version was recorded on August 17th, 2001 during the “Fearless” tour when the entire band was able to set up in the empty pub below the Totalrock studio offices in London. We played several songs that went straight out to the listeners live, which was a little weird as there was no audience in the room. But the recording holds up and the band played it well.
This is Michael Clayton Arbeeny on drums (who else?) Jamie Scott on bass, PJ Zitarosa on electric guitar and Kyle Cummings on keyboards.

BOMBAY DOGS - LAST CHANCE MONEY - Free MP3 Download
The second of the two Bombay Dogs songs included here. I don’t remember if it was myself that played the harmonica on this or not. I think it was. But, whoever it was should, maybe, have been told to ease off! :)

MICHAEL THARIN / DANNY VAUGHN - REVOLUTION - Free MP3 Download
I can’t remember what year it was when I was contacted by a Canadian song writer named Michael Tharin but he sent me some music and asked if I would be interested in singing some of his songs for him. I get a fair amount of these requests every year. I don’t do many of them but I really liked Michael’s writing style and he was doing this all off his own back from a home studio so I was really enthused about giving this one a try. So this is, essentially, a home demo. I still like the song. If I’m not mistaken it was included on a special compilation album put out by Melodicrock.com some years ago.

DANNY VAUGHN - BLACKBIRD - Free MP3 Download
It took me longer than most but last year I finally broke down and spent some hard-earned money on a new Mac and Logic Pro recording system. This was a huge leap of faith for me because I am not the most technologically gifted person. I just like to plug in and go, I don’t want to know what all the buttons and faders do. I still don’t know a lot but I’m amazed at what is possible and at the power contained in modern laptop computers.
The only way to learn is to dive in. So I decided to record something simple just to see how it all works. This is me, myself and I trying our best at the Crosby, Stills & Nash version of one of my favorite Beatles songs.

DANNY VAUGHN - RADIO GONG JINGLE - Free MP3 Download
Back in 2001 my friend, and long time web site manager, Chris Galler asked me to do a jingle for a radio station that he was working with in Germany. Mostly just my voice, some finger cymbals and percussion courtesy of a plastic waste paper basket. Blink and you’ll miss it.

THE NORTHERN LIGHT ORCHESTRA - THE WISE MEN - Free MP3 Download
I got a call from long time friend, Kip Winger (there are going to be a lot of names dropped in this one) asking if I’d be interested in singing on a track for a Christian rock album being written for and about Christmas. It was meant to be something similar to the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Now normally, I’m not really interested in this sort of thing but one doesn’t simply tell Kip, “Thanks, but no thanks”. He, in turn, sent me on to drummer extraordinaire, Ken Mary, who was heading up the project.
Then I saw the line up!
Along with Ken Mary on drums we have George Lynch on guitars, David Ellefson on Bass and Phillip Bardowell on vocals. It’s not really my cuppa tea, but I enjoyed doing it. Phillip took verse one and I took verse two. This was released in 2009.

DANNY VAUGHN - AMAZING GRACE - Free MP3 Download
It’s hard for me to believe that it’s already four years since the brother of my heart, Charlie White Elk, passed away. There is no way that I can ever adequately describe the impact his presence in my life continues to have. This was the first time in many years that I cried openly over the loss of a person I loved. And sometimes I still do. Charlie’s wife contacted me and asked if I would consider recording a version of Amazing Grace for the funeral. Charlie loved the song and loved my voice. It was the least that I could do. Doing my best to keep it together, I called upon my friend Giles Ramirez in Gibraltar and asked him to help me find a studio. Thanks to Nigel Palmer for supplying the studio and the keyboards for this. It’s one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to sing and it still hurts to listen to it.

DANNY VAUGHN - FOREVER YOUNG (Live) - Free MP3 Download
Have you had enough of this one yet? Lord knows how many versions there are floating around out there. Hayley Warren recorded this in London at the 12 Bar Club. I think this was on the first acoustic tour I had ever done and I can tell you that playing all by myself in front of a couple of hundred people (and often less!) is more nerve wracking for me than playing arenas and stadiums ever was. But listen to this crowd. They wanted to sing it themselves as much as they wanted me to sing it to them. I’ll tell you what; I’ll take an audience like this every time. There’s a bit of magic happening here.
