Vaughn - Soldiers And Sailors On Riverside

BAD WATER
2/27/96

On a moonless night we gathered 'round the stones
While the wind outside it whipped,
And howled and moaned
Then there came a scratching at the door
And a spirit spoke that was never heard before

"I have come in answer to your prayer
I can feel your sweat inside of there
I will give you all that you desire
And, in turn, there's one thing I require
Is it money?
I will steal for you
Is it women?
I can get them too"

"Don't stop with just your own delicious pain
Tell all your relations of my name
All you have is all I need
All your children come and worship me
I'll make you stronger
And cleverer than most
I'll feed you happiness
If you keep me close"

"You will hide your face,
For the love of bad water
You will turn your back on everyone.
You'll deny your faith,
For the love of bad water
And you will learn how deep bad water runs,
Oh, bad water runs."

"Call me sweet addiction, call me friend
I am the beginning of the end
Soon your sorry, old traditions will be gone
I am all you need from now on"

"You will hide your face
For the love of bad water
You will turn your back on everyone
You'll deny your faith
For the love of bad water
And you will learn how deep bad water runs
You will hide your face
For the love of bad water
You won't feel your hand upon your gun
You'll deny your faith
For the love of bad water
And you will learn how deep bad water runs
Oh, bad water runs"

IS THAT ALL THERE IS?
7/24/97

Take these hands
They will give you all I own
Take these fingers
They are worn down to the bone
And these legs can run to hell and back
When you put wings upon their feet
And this hearts' a stalled out motor
Until you tell it when to beat
And she said,

”Is that all there is?
 Is that all you've got?
 Can I wring you out?
 Just a few more drops?
Have I taken everything you have to give?
 Is that all there is?”

Take these shoulders
They are holding up the world
And these arms that will never wrap themselves
Around any other girl
And these lungs can't breath unless they get
The air that's close to you
And these eyes can't see until you choose to
Let the sunlight through
And she said....

”Is that all there is?
Is that all you've got?
Can I wring you out?
Just a few more drops
Have I taken everything you have to give?
Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
Did you rope the moon?
Who'd have thought
You'd run out so soon?
I don't mean to sound insensitive
But is that all there is?”

Everyone I know seems to share the same fate
Where the givers give and the takers take
We had good parents
We grew up well
Co-dependent, fucked up as hell
So take my love, my dreams, my fears,
My aspirations and my tears,
My job, my life, my soul, my time,
My sins, my house, my reason to be
And she said......

”Is that all there is?
Has the well run dry?
Did I miss a spot?
I don't believe that I
Would miss one drop of blood
You have to give
Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
Did you rope the moon?
Who'd have thought you'd run out so soon?
Are you holding out a little bit?
Or is that all there is?"

HEALING HANDS
1/26/93-7/7/95

I never thought I'd find my own way
That love had slipped away
And left me cold
I was swinging at shadows
I was handing out blame
Until you came
To fill my soul
'Cause it wasn't in my bottle
Or the bottom of my glass
I couldn't see it in my future
Or the wreckage of my past

Lay me down
Roll me over
Be my teacher
Be my lover
Show me how to fly
Help me to stand
With your healing hands

Would you drive with me westward?
Put some miles beneath these wheels
'Til trouble feels far behind
With all the passion in my body
Naked skin and naked soul
I need you to be mine
Somehow the words all failed me
In that quiet candle light
But you smiled and touched me gently
Told me it would be all right

Lay me down
Roll me over
Be my teacher
Be my lover
Show me how to fly
Help me to stand
With your healing hands

In a circle of two
Around Santa Fe fires
We made magic with our eyes
And in the waist deep snows of Yellowstone
There was no one but God and you and I
To save our lives
But I swear I found religion
On the South Dakota plains
And in you I have salvation
Over my poor, lost remains
Oh, lay me down......

Lay me down
Roll me over
Be my teacher
Be my lover
Show me how to fly
Help me to stand
With your healing hands

Lay me down
Roll me over
Be my teacher
Be my lover
I'll be your shelter
Yours to command
With your healing hands

A HANDFUL OF RAIN

Baby don’t be wakeful
Let your daddy sleep
All the things that scare you
Surely, they will keep
TV news and back rent blues
And all points in between
You count your needs on your worry beads
And then you start it all again

Listen at the window
To the locusts in the trees
Talking ‘bout the heat, you know
Waiting on a breeze
Back porch sounds they slow you down
To a simple kind of view
Front porch speed too much for me
Racing everything they do
And I can’t make out
With all their running ‘round
Where are they going to?
And would they bother if they knew?

That you can’t hold on to a handful of rain
And you can’t teach the wind to call your name
You can’t make a deal with time
And be it not to change
It slips away like a handful of rain

Flowers in the kitchen
Dream catcher by my bed
Can’t you hear the angels
That are singing in my head?
Weave a prayer around you where
You stand in disbelief
Music plays for you always
And puts wings upon your feet
And the brightest road will always go
To where you want to be
And won’t you come with me?

‘Cause you can’t hold on to a handful of rain
And you can’t teach the wind to call your name
You can’t make a deal with time
And be it not to change
It slips away like a handful of rain

Weave a prayer around you where
You stand in disbelief
Music plays with you always
And puts wings upon your feet
And the brightest road will always go
To where you want to be
Won’t you come with me?

‘Cause you can’t hold on to a handful of rain
And you can’t teach the wind to call your name
You can’t make a deal with time
And be it not to change
It slips away like a handful of rain
It slips away like a handful of rain

STONE MONKEY
11/5/96

There was a wakeup call in quarantine
A show of hands in a submarine
And the patron saint of midtown's
Been playing three card all day long
The sky turned the color of tourmaline
The nurse shark brought me Atropene
Stone monkey crashing heavens' scene
Where he does not belong

And I can't wait until the lights go out
I just might find out what the shouting's all about

Lunch was served on the barricades
There was a civil suit by the chambermaids
As I turned a tired circle
In a rowboat with one oar
The sign is given and the runner steals
Achilles rocked back on his heels
And overhead the thunder peals
Stone monkey goes to war

And I can't wait until the lights go out
I just might find out what the shouting's all about

Monkey see
Monkey do
Something else 'cause he sure don't want
To end up like me and you
Monkey time
Monkey shines
Everything is gonna work out just fine

There's a hawker passing shirts around
There's a tourist trap on sacred ground
And the four big heads are laughing down
As the people are detained
Paris burned and the critics wailed
The old gods were taken off to jail
Stone monkey rules in heavens' pale
Everything has changed

And I can't wait until the lights go out
And I might just find out what the shouting’s all about

Monkey see
Monkey do
Something else 'cause he sure don't want
To end up like me and you
Monkey time
Monkey shines
Everything is gonna work out just fine

SHADOWLAND
2/21/91

It's sunset over Eden
And the garden lights with fire
The headlights wink against the haze
Calling out my name
The snake is in the valley
And he whispers soft and sweet
Steals away your innocence
Leaves you shivering in the heat
And I send my voice to heaven
"Won't you save my place"?
I will laugh at the shadow's kiss
Cold upon my face

I've smelled rain over the desert
Seen lightning rise up to the sky
I've seen lovers names carved in stone
Knowing that they're gone
And I swear upon my bible
And I swear upon my gun
That when darkness rails against me
I will put it to the run

And I send my voice to heaven
"Won't you save my place?"
I will laugh at the shadow's kiss
Cold upon my face

I will take a leap of faith
And make my way through Shadowland
Disappear into the night
For the other side of Shadowland

Won't you walk with me this evening?
Down this dusky canyon road
Tell me secrets that you hold
Never before told
And I pray the wind is with you
And I hope your legs are strong
'Cause the road is ever winding
And it’s stretching out so long

And I send my voice to heaven
"Won't you save my place?"
I will laugh at the shadow's kiss
Cold upon my face

I will take a leap of faith
And make my way through Shadowland
Disappear into the night
For the other side of Shadowland

It’s sunset over Eden
And the garden lights with fire
The headlights wink against the haze
Calling out my name
And I send my voice to heaven
"Won't you save my place?"

I will take a leap of faith
And make my way through Shadowland
Disappear into the night
For the other side of Shadowland
And if I ever said goodbye
Would you wait for me on the other side
Of Shadowland?
There's a siren song that's blowing cold
For the long, dark night upon my soul
Shadow, Shadowland
I will take a leap of faith
Shadow, Shadowland
And I will make my way
Shadow, Shadowland
Disappear into the night
Shadow, Shadowland
Until you’re in my arms at the other side

SOLDIERS AND SAILORS ON RIVERSIDE
12/4-12/5/96

I found myself standing on my old home ground
Though I've heard that you never can go back again
As the first snow of winter, like hope, drifted down
I turned my collar up to the wind

At the "Soldiers and Sailors" down on Riverside
I kept my watch over dead man's hill
And I swore that I heard my own voice slipping by
Must be a trick of the wind, a trick of the chill
Between the death of a dream and the fortunes of war
I'm spinning helpless in this circle I've been in before
And I reach for the hand that's always been there
And come up with empty air
Empty air

And over and over
I see that light that was in your eyes

And word for word
I remember the last words you said to me
And word for word
I remember you promised you’d wait for me

All the walking wounded on this Manhattan beat
We keep on pounding the street
Waiting for something to clear
And we've all got our memories
That keep pushing our feet, well
I've got a face in my rear view mirror

And over and over
I see that look that was in your eyes

And word for word
I remember the last words you said to me
And word for word
I remember you promised you’d wait for me

PARADISE AIN'T HOME
? 92-7/10/95

Josie sits by the fire escape window and she
Looks out on her American dream
Weekend boys are working on their cars and the
Streets are smelling of gasoline
Josie tries to write her momma letters and she
Thinks about her man back home
Sends some money back when she can manage and she
Calls once a month from a neighbors phone

And she got
Pretty empty pockets, yeah
And she got
Pretty, empty hands
And she thinks of all the things
She wants to say to him
And she hopes he understands

If this is paradise
Then paradise aint home
If I have to walk away
Then I'll walk away alone
No use living in paradise
When the lights are on and paradise aint home

Josie watches the kids play in the hydrant and she
Smells the cooking from the floors below
Traffic never, ever stops talking and there aint
Nothing to do, no place to go
And she got
A black and white t.v. don't work
And she got
Laundry on the line
And this three room space still feels out of place
Like she's sleepwalking all the time

If this is paradise
Then paradise aint home
If I have to walk away
Then I'll walk away alone
No use living in paradise
When the lights are on and paradise aint home

Josie hears them fighting on the corner
They've been drinking since friday, noon
3 a.m. and it's too hot for sleeping
Sunday morning is coming soon

And she got
A hard earned case of homesick, yeah
And she got
A bargain with the lord
And she hopes she'll be forgiven
For giving up
But she knows she can't hold on much more

If this is paradise
Then paradise aint home
If I have to walk away
Then I'll walk away alone
It’s hard to cross the river wide
When you're sinking like a stone
If this is paradise
Then paradise
Paradise aint home

GANDY DANCER
4/26/96

Hang your head and come down lord
Gandy dancer don't sing no more
No more voices, no more calls
Big steel engine took it all

Up in the morning the rooster said
Swear one day I'm gonna kill him dead
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"
Rusty water cool my thirst
Alabama sun don't kill me first
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"

Hang your head and come down lord
Gandy dancer don't sing no more
No more voices, no more calls
Big steel engine took it all

I seen a picture of the boss man's wife
Stare too long take a year off your life
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"
I got a girl in a shanty town
Her lips so red and her skin so brown
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"

Hang your head and come down lord
Gandy Dancer don't sing no more
No more voices, no more calls
Big steel engine took it all

Over in China they built them a wall
Thousand miles long and a hundred foot tall
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"
When they was done they all stood back
Then came over here to help line on the track
Singing, "Hey, hey, swing that steel in line"

Hang your head and come down lord
Gandy dancer don't sing no more
No more voices, no more calls
Big steel engine took it all

THE VOICE
1/19/97

I was beaten down
I was broken by the night
I couldn't hear for all the noise
Didn't know who I was or where I'm going
That's when I heard the voice
It said, "Some I gave a heart for healing,
Some have the anger that destroys,
Others work and build and harvest with their hands,
To you, I gave the voice"

Raise it up and send it over
Sing for sorrow, sing for joy
Let your heart beat loud in answer
For I gave you the voice

Looking back, I guess I've always had a song
Running through my head
Maybe I've never had a choice
And I've lived like lightning over water
Looking for a place to land
Moving on
Following the voice

Raise it up and send it over
Sing your sorrow, sing your joy
Let your heart beat loud in answer
To you I gave the voice

Voices ring, voices sound
Together or alone
When you're up, when you're down
Carrying you home

Raise it up and send it over
Sing your sorrow, sing your joy
Let your heart beat loud in answer
To you I gave the voice
