AVALON
August 2005

If a star should fall
There are a million wishes to be made
If the rain should fall
Then maybe some hurt will be washed away
If a hammer falls
Then the building nails will be driven in
If a sparrow falls
They say that god will be listening

But if I should fall
Who will comfort me?
If I should fall
I know that I will long to be in

Avalon, oh Avalon
Comes to me when all hope is gone
Take me into your halls of salvation
Safe in your arms
Avalon, my Avalon
The memory of you still lingers on
You’re my hope; you’re my haven, my rescue
The dreamer lives on
Here in Avalon

If a picture fades
It goes too slow for the naked eye
If a memory fades away
It’s passing mourned with a simple sigh
If these colors fade
More will come marching in to take their place
But if your anger fades
All your pain will be erased

But if I should fade
Who will long for me?
What If I should fade?
I will dream to be in

Avalon, oh Avalon
Comes to me when all hope is gone
Take me into your halls of salvation
Safe in your arms
Avalon, sweet Avalon
Sing to me your redemption song
Safe in your harbor and healing
Is where I belong

Somewhere there will be arms for me
I can rest my head and heart upon
Somewhere there will be my own song to be sung
Ring out in Avalon

Avalon, oh Avalon
Comes to me when all hope is gone
Take me into your halls of salvation
Safe in your arms
Avalon, my Avalon
The memory of you still lingers on
You’re my hope; you’re my haven, my rescue
The dreamer lives on
Here in Avalon

CHASE THE FIRE

Upon an empty plain
A young one stands
A face without a name
An open book with willing hands
A hungry heart that carries it’s own flame
Framed inside a door
The journey calls
The maps are lost forevermore
Behind him just one shadow falls
He walks among the many
That have come this way before

Who will guide this brave, young traveller
Walking through the great unknown?
Sanctify the rites of passage
Who can follow where he goes?

I will chase the fire
Wherever it may burn
Desire will never let me be
I will chase the fire
Everywhere I turn
The fire it burns in me

A broken wing
A ragged road
A sacrifice to get you
Where you want to go
The endless hours
This heavy load
The laws of heaven tell us
That it always must be so

So welcome in the well worn soldier
Still with miles and miles to know
Give him peace for just one moment
Love him and then let him go

I will chase the fire
Wherever it may burn
Desire will never let me be
I will chase the fire
Everywhere I turn
The fire it burns in me

I will chase the fire
Wherever it may burn
Desire will never let me be
I will chase the fire
Everywhere I turn
The fire it burns in me

HOUSE OF CARDS
8/21/92-7/3/95

Well, I put up my walls
Built 'em up high
Covered 'em over to block out the sky
Seeking protection from a world in a spin
But, somehow, you got in

You can build your houses out of stone
You can build your houses out of brick
Shore up your walls
Twenty feet thick
But if you let love inside
And if you let down your guard
End up shaking in a house of cards

This aint the first one I've made
I've had a dozen or more
Somehow the wolf was always at my door
I thought you'd eat me up if I let you in
But you proved me wrong again

You can build your houses out of stone
You can build your houses out of brick
Shore up your walls
Twenty feet thick
But if you let love inside
And if you let down your guard
End up shaking in a house of cards

I got a windbreak wall
I got a strong foundation
I got solid timbers and good insulation
But at night I can feel
The whole damn place is shaking
Because of you

Well, no man is an island
When it comes to his pain
No one ever wants to help him through it again
Now I don't know how you found me
Or how you got the key
It must be in the cards for me

You can build your houses out of stone
You can build your houses out of brick
Shore up your walls
Twenty feet thick
But if you let love inside
And if you let down your guard
End up shaking in a house of cards

I WANNA GET TO KNOW YOU
8/7/96

I wanna get to know your dog
Maybe open up a dialogue
We could follow you around at your heels
And I'd know just how your carpet feels
Because your dog and me
We are right in tune
We like to sit beneath your window
Howling at the moon
We'd never get the blues
'Cause we could chew those shoes
You threw

I wanna get to know you
I wanna know your kitty, too
I'd like to be a big ball of string
Or some Friskies be the very thing
'Cause I know your kitty
Got a mind of her own
And if I got to know her
I'd never leave her alone
And we could play all night
If that'd be all right
With you

I could be the linoleum that's under your feet
Or a big dust bunny on your linen sheets
There's a million things that I would love to be
'Cause they're closer to you than me

I wanna get to know your fish
That would be my utmost wish
We could take you to a tropical isle
And we'd slip between the crocodiles
I'd like to take your fish swimming in a reedy pond
In a river, in a lake,
Or in the tub I'm fond
Of floating on my back
And we could swim like that
With you
With you....
Fish food

REMEMBER WHEN
4/17/01

Another Saturday night that ended too soon
Another bad date left her crying in her bedroom
He never once listened to a word she said
He was all hands and eyes and bad lines instead

Oh, oh, oh,
Same old story again
Oh, oh, oh,
So many males and so few men

Tell me where did all the gentlemen go?
Fred Astaire and Joe DiMaggio
If we only knew now what we knew then
But all we can do is remember when

There's a page in our story where nobody goes
There's some old treaty paper blowing down a dirt road
The great white fathers, "Don't you worry" they said
"There will be justice for all every mouth will be fed"

Oh, oh, oh,
All those pretty promises they said
Oh, oh, oh,
Don't sound like life on the Rez

Are there no more men of honor out there?
Frank Fools Crow and Luther Standing Bear
We try to live on the good our hearts intend
But all we can do is remember when

I turned on my radio to help me get along
I heard a thousand commercials and maybe one song
I heard teenybopper bubblegum
I heard anger and grief
But I never heard anything give me hope or belief

Oh, oh, oh,

Who put all the visionaries down
Oh, oh, oh,
Did they pack up their dreams and get out of town

Tell me why do all the great ones fall
Jimi and Janis, John Lennon and all
Marvin, and Otis, and Stevie Ray
They all still had so much to say

Tell me when our priorities went to hell
Investments and paper trails, buy and sell
It's not a way of living I can defend
All I can do is remember when

SPEAKING IN TONGUES
1993-6/29/95

We were like storms
We flashed like lightning
We were like horses
Couldn’t live without it
We spoke our hearts
We braved anything
Said our piece, made our vows
And thought no more about it

Looking back
On yesterday
There was no wish too small
No desire we couldn’t say
Looking forward
Like we were blind
We won’t sacrifice our habits
And routines we hide behind

Now the heart won’t heal what the hand has broken
If the eyes can’t see where the trouble lies
And the only words that are never spoken
Are the ones we need to try

Speaking in tongues
Looking for information
Trying to find out where it all went wrong
Peace never comes
When you can’t find an explanation
Speaking in tongues for so long

Now we’re so close
And yet so far away
Words become like violence
And they make no sense to say
We’re not together
We just hang around
It’s the things you don’t see coming
That will put you farthest down

And we thought that money would solve our problems
But all it did was make them change
Between the work, the bills, the kids and the bed
We can’t say the words that scream in our heads
So we turn our backs and fall asleep instead

Speaking in tongues
Looking for information
Trying to find out where it all went wrong
Peace never comes
When you can’t find an explanation
Speaking in tongues for so long

Speaking in tongues
Looking for information
Trying to find out where it all went wrong
Peace never comes
When you can’t find an explanation
Speaking in tongues......
Speaking in tongues for so long

TROUBLE WALKING

Well I blow into town
With the hammer locked down
As the iodine sunset
Spills its blood on the ground
I like the implication

I’m a nine mile skid
On an eight mile track
My mouth gets me into trouble
And my feet can’t get me back
I’m in it for the duration
And while you’re chewing on that
Open negotiations

Trouble walking
Take that ride the action’s guaranteed
Trouble walking
Ain’t a little trouble
Just the thing you need
Sure works for me, baby

I can feast on the scraps
I can drink from the dregs
I can live off the spread
Of her high steppin’ chicken legs
Mmm poultry in motion

There’s a dog I can hunt
There’s a roof I can raise
There’s a job I can do
And I don’t care what it pays
I’ll live off the promotion
I can work it for days
I like the locomotion

Trouble walking
Take that ride I’ll get you up to speed
Trouble walking
Ain’t a little trouble
Just the thing you need

WAIT FOREVER

Each morning when the hammer chimes
I’m doing time; I’m doing what comes hard for me
It’s like living in the great divide
And I’m sick inside; I’m sick of working here

Then shining like a summer sky
I see your eyes; I see you’re all I really need
To set me free

I could wait forever
If forever’s when the waiting’s done
I could wait forever
Wait until forever comes

You say that now is not the time and then
I don’t know when, I don’t know if you’re hearing me
So I keep on pushing mountains down
‘Til I’m heaven bound and heaven knows I will

Standing in the eleventh hour
I’m overpowered over everything you’ve done for me
To set me free

I could wait forever
If forever’s when the waiting’s done
I could wait forever

I’m howling at the moon for you
Tell me what I have to do
What do I have to do?

I could wait forever
If forever’s when the waiting’s done
I could wait forever
Never will say never
Wait until forever comes
I could wait forever
